Royal Blue

Famous beautiful hand-painted earthenware with a specific blue colour from the town of Delft. They started to make the Royal Delft in 1653 and is a part of the Dutch cultural history.

'De Porceleyne Fles' (the porcelain bottle) is the name of the manufacturer and the only one who makes the original Royal Blue. When I started there at seventeen years of age as a painter, they allowed us every once in a while to make something for ourselves; both modelling clay and painting. We could paint the white pottery as we saw fit, without the trade-mark on the back of course.

Amongst other things I made this plate (32cm diameter) with a portrait of our late Queen Juliana.
